PlayStation’s latest State of Play event just drew to a close and while it may not have been chock full of the first-party announcements many of us were itching for, we did receive a thorough update on Sony’s upcoming third-party release slate.
I wouldn’t say it’s a State of Play for the history books. We did get a nice little new look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ahead of its release next month. Other games featured in the showcase included the Splatoon-esque Foamstars, bizarre indie Baby Steps, and Ubisoft’s upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. These reveals were all very pleasant, but there was only really one star of the show. As they say, save the best until last. Sony rounded out the event by showcasing a brand new trailer for the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - and not only that, but we got that coveted release date too.

We don’t have long to wait, my friends. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is coming to PlayStation 5 on 29 February 2024. In this latest instalment, “Cloud Strife and his friends have escaped the dystopian city of Midgar and embark on a new journey across the wide world of Gaia to pursue the vengeful swordsman, Sephiroth.”

Over on the PlayStation blog, devs teased new synergy moves in combat which allow players “to use synergy commands and abilities freely at any time by using up a gauge charge in a similar manner to Limit Breaks.” Skill trees have also been added as well as “Materia with new abilities not seen in the first” game. Additionally, they teased Red XIII’s unique ‘revenge gauge’ mechanic who is a playable character fully this time around.
Red XIII was an accompanying member in the previous game, before becoming an official party member in this one. It’s been confirmed that in Rebirth, we’ll acquire new accompanying members that too, like Red XIII, will become playable in the game’s next sequel. Additionally, while you cannot carry your Remake save over, it’s been revealed that players of the previous game will be able to “start with a little something extra”. Who else cannot wait to dive in?
