Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth only has a very short window of PS5 exclusivity

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's PlayStation 5 exclusivity window has been revealed - and it's much shorter than expected.

Words by Dan Lipscombe

It’s not long to wait for the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, now known as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and for those who don’t own a PlayStation 5, you’ve got less of a wait than some predicted.

We all knew that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was going to release exclusivly to PS5, but it’s only a temporary stay. Now we know just how temporary. The exclusivity window for the game is only three months.

Take a look at the latest Final Fantasy VII Rebirth trailer below.

This means non-PlayStation owners can carry on their journey with Cloud and the team even sooner than anticipated. According to news around the latest trailer which dropped last night as Sony’s State of Play event, Square Enix confirmed the game is only exclusive to PS5 until 29 May 2024.

While this isn’t a solid confirmation that other platform releases will drop right away, it’s the shortest exclusivity window for some time, meaning it’s still worth being excited to get back to Midgar. This comes after comments from Final Fantasy XVI producer, Naoki Yoshida, who spoke about ending exclusivity.

Perhaps the windows are getting shorter for Square Enix titles as we know the company has been struggling for a while now, particularly after the underselling of several games including Forspoken. This could mean that bumping up the release would see more income before the end of the financial year.

This is an eagerly anticipated release, so it’s likely that Square Enix are hedging their bets on a stellar launch. As producer Yoshinori Kitaase gets the hype train rolling by saying, “This second instalment of the Final Fantasy VII remake will feature elements from the previous game, as well as greatly enhanced features such as the vast world map to explore.”

This is great news for fans who felt the previous entry was a little more linear than expected. However, as one of the greatest RPGs ever made, this remake will always garner a lot of fans as seen with the news that the first part of the project shipped over seven million copies worldwide.
