The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered immediately review-bombed by angry 'fans'

January has been kind to The Last of Us fans. Last Friday saw The Last of Us Part II Remastered launch, garnering praise from fans and critics alike.

The game scored a very respectable 91 on Metacritic, earning it the site’s “must-play” accolade. Here at GAMINGbible, we awarded The Last of Us Part II a perfect 10, writing, “The Last of Us Part II Remastered is utter perfection. Naughty Dog has the advantage that it’s working with what is already one of the most-awarded games of all-time. The Last of Us Part II Remastered is so much more than a new lick of paint though. While those new bells and whistles do boost the main game’s intensity and immersion, making this the definitive way to experience this stage of Ellie’s story, it’s far from the only way in which this release shines.” I do wish that was the only side of this story.

Unfortunately, the review-bombing has returned. You’ll likely recall that Part II was targeted by a slew of hate upon release, namely due to backlash against the character of Abby. Personally, I adore Abby but I also understand those who don’t feel that way. There’s a stark contrast though between disliking a character and rating a game a score of zero or one simply because events didn’t transpire as you wished.

Over on Metacritic, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is being targeted by the same kind of hate campaign that we saw back in 2020. “Story in this game is equal to [a] bad b-movie from the 1980s,” read one negative review, while another said, “One of the most boring, standard, [and] predictable storylines ever. I am missing times when people cared about the game[s] they make.” Hm, I can think of a few moments that were far from predictable.

Someone recommended that you “buy [the] cheaper PS3 version”. Uh, wrong game buddy. “This game will never get any real respect,” comments one reviewer. “It’s just as bad as when it launched originally in 2020. Just poorly written characters and nonsensical story,” adds another.

You get the idea. Almost all of these low score reviews are aimed at the story itself, and less so what actually makes this rerelease unique, like No Return and the Lost Levels. As much as I hate to admit it though, I don’t think any of us are too surprised. I’d have been shocked if this discourse hadn't reared its head again. Overall, the user score sits at a very fair 8.2, with 18% being attributed as negative.
