New PlayStation 5 owners are being told to change one setting to drastically reduce download waiting times.
As we approach the end of the year, sales and deals become all the more regular, so it’s the perfect time to treat yourself to a new game console like an Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5, the latter of which has a sleek new design releasing later this month.

However as these new-gen consoles continue to grow more advanced every generation, the longer the list of settings that need to be tweaked and changed to get the best experience. Back when I was a kid it’d be as simple as plugging the console into a TV and the wire would do the rest, but now you’ve got to mess around with connections, compatibility with the TV if you want better graphics or faster framerates, or some other convoluted system to experience your new games at their best.

One PlayStation 5 owner has a warning for new owners of the console though, believing if any setting should be changed, it should be setting your Wi-Fi to 5GHz.
Posted on Reddit with the handle indistinctly, the user said: “If you recently got a PlayStation 5 during Black Friday or Cyber Monday and have a wireless mesh system and are experiencing oddly slow download speeds on your system make sure you set your network to 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz.”
They went on to say they were previously experiencing severe drops in download speeds, with some taking up to “12 hours” to finish. After setting their network speed to 5GHz this reportedly resolved the issue.
Whether or not this affects everybody the same way is another question, but if you’ve been wondering why it’s been taking hours, or even days, to install a particular hefty download, that might be why.
