I'd like to make it very clear before we begin that I'm definitely not the sort of person that thinks you should simply accept what your given without complaining. Everything should be open to criticism! But when does criticism turn into nitpicking? It's a line I believe we may have found today.
A brand-new PlayStation 5 free download, which doesn't actually require PlayStation Plus, has caused some fans to complain. Why? It doesn't look nice enough, apparently. Blimey.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth arrives this month, and PlayStation 5 gamers can currently get access to a free demo of the long-awaited RPG - no PlayStation Plus needed. Not a bad deal at all, right?

Except, after playing the demo, various gamers have come away complaining that the game looks more than a little rough around the edges.
As spotted by Gamesradar, Twitter and Reddit have their share of posts calling out Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's visuals, with many claiming it doesn't look good enough for a PlayStation 5 game.
One Twitter user wrote: "Is it just me or does the [Final Fantasy VII Rebirth] demo look really bad? Texture quality is very bad, pop ins all the time, and a lot of shimmering on very fine details. Apparently this game was built for the PS5 and it's not just a 'remake'. Is this correct?"
"I spotted a fair few subpar textures and models in the demo," one Reddit user wrote in a lengthy piece. "I’m not shocked by that given the now-apparent scope of the game and the limitations of the engine but I can’t help but feel a little bit down about it regardless. The highest shadow map cascade cutoff distance is another pain point."

It is, of course, worth noting that demo versions are rarely indicative of the final quality of the game. We also know that graphics do not make or break a game, as valid as criticisms such as the above may be.
By all accounts, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to be a massive, sweeping open-world RPG. As long as it gets the story, gameplay, and characters right, I'm sure we'll all be able to overlook any smaller issues in the visual department.
