2023 was without question one of the best years for video game releases. But let's be honest, as great as the year 2023 was, it did our ever-expanding video game pile of shame no favours whatsoever.
Whether it’s Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and more, we were certainly spoilt for choice when it came to what new video games to play. One other fantastic video game that may have been swept under the rug due to the stellar year was Final Fantasy XVI.

In my review of Final Fantasy XVI, I said it: “is truly an epic adventure. It has a fantastical story, over-the-top character performances, a sublime soundtrack, epic boss battles and it looks gorgeous to boot. Seriously, what’s there not to love about this game?”

Final Fantasy XVI was released for the PlayStation 5 on 22 June 2023 and it is confirmed to be released on PC. Yet, at the time of writing, Square Enix has not confirmed a release date, all we know is that Final Fantasy XVI will arrive on PC at some point this year, hopefully within the next few months. However, if the recent news is to be taken into account, that illusive release date could be very near courtesy of a free upcoming download.
When talking to Game Informer, Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed that a PC demo is on the way which surely should mean that the release date wouldn't be far off. When on the topic of figuring out the PC specifications, Yoshida said: “To do that, we're looking to release a demo for the PC version as well.”
“Again, we can't really talk about too much in terms of details of when it's going to come out – I think in a little bit more time we'll be in a better place to announce things,” he continued. “But one thing's for sure: It won't be too distant in the future; it won't be a year, it won't be two years, it will probably be shorter than that, so stay tuned.”
So there you have it, before the full game arrives we’re being treated to a free playable demo. Final Fantasy XVI is out now on PlayStation 5 and is coming soon to PC.
