PlayStation 5 system update makes massive improvement to system storage

The latest PlayStation 5 beta update is packed with incredible new features - including a major improvement to the system’s potential storage.

In case you missed it, Sony announced a huge beta update yesterday for the PlayStation 5. If you don’t know what a beta update consists of, select PS5 users from the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, and France will be offered the chance to try out the update for themselves. They’ll then provide feedback, Sony will act on this feedback, and the update will be rolled out worldwide later this year. This means that it’s not available to everyone and some of the features included may change before they land on all consoles. It sounds like a very promising update though and includes added accessibility features, support for compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices, social feature enhancements, and larger capacity M.2 SSD support.

It’s the larger storage capacity that’s really caught users’ attention. If you purchase an SSD, you can currently increase the storage of the PlayStation 5 by up to 4TB. If you’re one of the lucky people selected to sample the beta though, you’ll be able to now increase the storage to 8TB. Hopefully, this is one of the features which will reach the rest of us later this year.

The M.2 SSD must meet certain requirements. You can view those requirements over on the PlayStation Blog - and do make sure you have a careful read. SSDs can be pricey, so you want to make sure you're making the correct purchase.

In related news, the update also finally allows you to turn down or turn off the PlayStation 5’s power-on beep. Yes, that means no more waking the spouse when you’re trying to sneak in one more round of Fortnite or Warzone at 12AM.
