PlayStation Plus free game is Baldur's Gate 3 meets Assassin's Creed Black Flag

PlayStation Plus' Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a must-play for fans of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Baldur's Gate 3.

PlayStation Plus users have one last chance to play Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - the perfect game for those of you who enjoy both Baldur’s Gate 3 and Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.

We’re all familiar with the PlayStation Plus cycle by now. While each month brings a dollop of new games, several more are also taken away. In total, 10 games will depart in January from the extra and premium tiers. Those games are: Back 4 Blood, Devil May Cry 5, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, It Takes Two, Jett The Far Shore, The Missing J.J Macfield and the Island of Memories, Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae, Omno, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, and Snowrunner. If you want to dive into any of the aforementioned titles, you only have until Tuesday 16 January to roll credits - and there’s one in particular I want to draw your attention to.

Baldur’s Gate 3 won 2023’s GOTY accolade at The Game Awards. Take a look at it in action below.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire first launched on PlayStation back in 2020. From developers Versus Evil, this RPG sees players assume the role of a ‘Watcher’, someone who is able to look into people’s souls and read their memories. It’s the follow up to 2015’s Pillars of Eternity but developers did note upon release that new players can dive straight into the sequel. Clearly, those who did sample the first instalment will benefit from some familiarity with the characters, gameplay, and story.

Seeing as Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire centres around seafaring, you can understand why fans of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag may be interested. It’s a much more rudimentary game than the sprawling Baldur’s Gate 3, but the gameplay of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire certainly harkens back to earlier instalments in the Baldur’s Gate franchise.

According to How Long To Beat, it takes an average of 61 hours to wrap up the game’s main story, with players spending around 95 hours on the main missions and side quests. Squeezing in 61 hours between now and 16 January isn’t impossible, but it is a tall order. That being said, do give Pillars of Eternity II a go if you can.
