Red Dead Redemption 2 finally playable at 60fps on PlayStation 5

Red Dead Redemption 2 finally playable at 60fps on PlayStation 5

It's been 84 years... but we can finally play RDR2 in 60fps

Whenever I see Red Dead Redemption 2 mentioned, I wonder if Rockstar Games has done something annoying, or whether an exciting new mod has appeared on the scene. Today it’s the latter, though the “mod” is for the PlayStation 5 so that we can finally play RDR2 at 60fps.

It’s been an issue dogging the game since the PS5 launched – you only have to visit Reddit to see the countless times players have frustratingly asked why RDR2 hasn’t had a 60fps patch yet. One user said, “The fact that Rockstar haven’t done a 60fps patch for next-gen is so lazy. If it had a higher online population with more microtransactions they would. Even Ubisoft did a 60fps patch for Far Cry 5.”

Remember when RDR2 launched? No? Then revisit the trailer now

We hear you. Though, it’s worth pointing out, that some of the blame also lies at Sony’s feet too, as a YouTuber pointed out after seeing how 60fps looks on a hacked PS5. “I've gotta be honest, I am so incredibly annoyed with Sony and their ignorance with backward compatibility, they could be doing so much more with PS4 games and even PS3 games,” they explained. “We are once again in an era where people with hacked consoles get so much more from their consoles and it's not even piracy, AND we are in the midst of reputable rumours of PS5 Pro like wtf?”

Wherever you lay the blame – at Rockstar or Sony – 60fps is the minimum gamers expect, even if those games are older than new-gen consoles. Fortunately, there are hacks for your PS5 that will allow you to play RDR2 and other titles at this desired framerate. Finally. Having seen the glory of 60fps for Arthur Morgan and co, I’m afraid to turn on my PS5 and be greeted with the bleak reality of choppy gameplay without this patch.

That’s the choice gamers are being forced to make: hack or suffer. Okay, that’s a bit dramatic, but it speaks of an issue with consoles that should really be addressed before even newer consoles are launched. As ThunderRoaring said, “The fact that you need to hack a PS5 to play a 5 year old game at 60fps shows the absolute state of console gaming.”

It’s frustrating, yes. However, thanks to people who refuse to settle, those of us wishing to hack our consoles can enter through the hallowed gates and into the realm of 60fps for older games. We just need to put extra effort in that devs could do a lot quicker.
