PC freebie: Acclaimed WW2 game free to download and keep right now

Get a bargain for your PC by downloading this acclaimed WW2 game!

When it comes to video games, there’s usually a price tag attached to them. But every now and again we get lucky and can grab a game for free – today is one of those days! Right now, you can get a copy of the acclaimed Unity of Command: Stalingrad Campaign.

Check out the battlefield in the Unity of Command trailer!

This World War II based game delves into the complexities of the entire Stalingrad Campaign, which took place on the Eastern Front between 1942 and 1943. Not only can gamers dive into history to implement their own strategic genius, but they can also play as both Axis or Soviet soldiers.

Normally, Unity of Command costs £8.39 on Steam, so you’re getting a real bargain here. We’d argue that even if you’re not into war games, this might be worth checking out. That being said, one review has stated that the game is “very minimalistic” and “difficult to win”, meaning you shouldn’t be expecting Call of Duty style gameplay or graphics.

First released in 2012, Unity of Command: Stalingrad Campaign received a lot of praise from gamers and critics, who commended its “innovation”. “This is a REALLY good game,” posted one gamer. “it's almost more of a puzzle game than a normal strategy war game, because of the tight turn count and focus on keeping your lines of supply open while cutting off the enemy's”.

This indie title has a total of 17 scenarios for you to play through, as well as “History Mode”, which allows players to enjoy replays of the best action from the battlefront. It may not offer a cinematic experience, but what it lacks in graphics it makes up with in historic accuracy.

However, while the majority of feedback is positive, some players claim it feels like a puzzle rather than a strategic war game.

Despite a handful of mixed reviews, this PC freebie has had a lot of players scrambling to download it while Fanatical’s Summer Sale is still on. Unfortunately, there have been issues with people attempting to access the game once they’ve downloaded it.

According to a recent Reddit thread, a lot of gamers have been struggling to access the freebie without the use of a VPN. Most players have been able to resolve the issue, thanks to the help of some truly dedicated Unity of Command fans. Crisis averted.

If you too want to test your mettle and mind, you can get Unity of Command: Stalingrad Campaign for free at Fanatical.
