Starfield was one of the top three best-selling Steam games in 2023, only being beaten by Hogwarts Legacy and Baldur’s Gate 3.
Despite all odds, Bethesda’s new IP Starfield performed quite well in the year of its release. It’s not a huge surprise given the overwhelming hype prior to the game’s launch, bolstered by it being an Xbox and PC exclusive.

When it was released Starfield was met with positive reviews from critics, and while many fans enjoyed their time with the game, many also considered it to be a bit of a missed opportunity. Space travel was seen as a crushing disappointment, and the explorable planets didn’t feel like they were worth exploring.

After thousands of hours across over 10 million players, many came to the conclusion Starfield was just a Fallout game in space, and while its player count has dropped below even The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it’s still considered to be a great RPG if nothing else.
Looking back though, it’s been discovered that Starfield was amongst the top three best-selling games on Steam in terms of revenue. The Bethesda game earned over $235 million since its September launch.
It was beaten by 2023’s overall best-selling game Hogwarts Legacy, which took second place with $341 million, and to no surprise, Baldur’s Gate 3 which took first place with $657 million.

Bethesda has promised there’s more to come for Starfield in 2024. The big one is official mod support for the game through Creation Club 2.0, which promises to be a significant upgrade over what was featured in Skyrim and Fallout 4/76.
There are also story expansions on the way, which promise to add characters to interact with, new places to explore, and hopefully new methods of transportation, as walking around planets on foot can be a bit of a bore.
Starfield is currently available on Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
