Maybe it’s because many of us were raised on Pokémon, enjoying inputting codes to get our digital hands on mystery gifts – whatever the reason, we love mysterious freebies. Unless they have sinister connotations, which, fortunately, these gifts don't. I’m, of course, talking about the massive Steam sale, delivering hundreds of games at heavily reduced prices, as well as a mystery freebie when you take part.
It should go without saying that nobody knows exactly what gift they’ll get until it lands in their inbox (hence the term “mystery”). That being said, there are several rewards you could end up with, such as a free game or voucher – there’s even mention of some lucky gamers getting a Steam Deck. All you need to do is spend at least £10 in the sale, though it’s unlikely you’ll win a Steam Deck from spending the minimum amount.

The reason for such a generous sale is due to Fanatical turning 11. Although Fanatical isn’t Steam owned, most of the games they offer come in the version of a Steam key, so this is really just a Steam sale through a third party. Should you be interested in purchasing a game you’ve had your eyes on for a while, you have until 15 November before the sale ends and prices go back to normal.

There are some bangers available for a fraction of their price, like Red Dead Redemption II: Ultimate Edition for just £26.09, with a whopping 71 per cent off its price. Even five years on, it’s considered one of the best open-world games out there, with fans calling it an “untouchable masterpiece”.
Resident Evil 7: Gold Edition has also been dramatically cut (though not as much as Ethan will be after the Baker family get their hands on him), costing only £10.24. If you’re feeling especially spicy and want to throw caution to the wind, you can purchase a Mystery Bundle for as little as £1; you won’t know what games you’re getting, but what a way to spend some loose change to find out.
Remember: you only have until 15 November to take advantage of this sale and its freebies, so get cracking.
