Steam's most important 'game' is completely free to download and keep right now

If you have any level of any interest in game development, you’ve likely scratched that itch via RPG Maker XP - and if you haven’t, now is your chance to.

Developed by Gotcha Gotcha Games and released all the way back in 2005, RPG Maker XP is a real gem. It does exactly what it says on the tin. The programme helps complete novices craft their own RPG. “RPG Maker lets you create an original role-playing game without any prior specialised knowledge or training,” the synopsis reads. “RPG Maker XP is full of the functions you've been asking for, including game data encryption and a scripting feature that lets you change the very heart of the RPG Maker engine.”

As pointed out by PC Gamer, RPG Maker XP is responsible for some great releases, including Corpse Party, To the Moon, and Mad Father. I can’t talk about RPG Maker XP though without mentioning Pokémon Uranium. This stellar fan-made release was created using the software, taking players to the Tandor region and featuring eight gym badges to collect, and over 190 Pokémon to catch.
