The Witcher 3 free DLC quest hailed as one of the best in the game

The Witcher 3 free DLC quest hailed as one of the best in the game

What's that sound? Could it be the sound of trotters and clinking gold...?

Remember that time when an entire village got turned into pigs? As much as it sounds like an outtake from Spirited Away, it’s actually the premise of one of the best free DLC quests in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so say the fans. The “piggy magic” has weaved a powerful spell over gamers, causing them to look more closely at every pig they encounter in-game.

If you don’t know which quest I’m speaking of, first of all, shame on you. ‘Fools’ Gold’ is one of several free DLCs The Witcher 3 received, and while some have criticised its story of greed and trotting hooves, it’s a hidden gem among more of the lacklustre CD Projekt Red freebies.

The tale begins as Geralt approaches Lurtch, where he encounters three bandits eager to tuck into the pig they’re roasting while a sobbing man named Yontek looks on. Yontek soon reveals that that isn’t just any pig, but someone he knew turned into one – in fact, the whole village has succumbed to “piggy magic”. Geralt being Geralt decides to investigate to see if this is true, soon discovering that yes, these pigs are magical.

Cursed gold has befallen these greedy piggies and only Geralt can save them. Whether Geralt succeeds is really down to you, the point here is not whether Geralt saves the day but whether you enjoy this quest. If you answer no, in the words of Pepsi, chances are you’re wrong. “My favourite quest in the game thus far,” shared Redditor u/CranialCovering, alongside a screenshot of a chonky pig snuffling on some food.

“It gets so many complaints, but I love this one!” replied one gamer, before adding, “I adapted for a Brancalonia/DnD adventure (so many cardboard pig tokens!) and my players loved it too.” How wholesome is that? These greedy piggies inspired other quests in other universes, further proving that it’s a fantastic DLC, with talking Roach coming in as a very close second.

Arguably what makes ‘Fools’ Gold’ so enjoyable is that you can play the game several times over before uncovering it. “I too didn't care for this quest, but I missed it until I think my third or fourth playthrough. Finding "new" side quests after several playthroughs is so cool, so even though I didn't care for it, it's still cool,” explained BoxGolem.
