Would The Witcher be the same without Geralt? Hopefully, we'll never find out

The Witcher 4 is well and truly locked in our sights now, even more so in the wake of news that Geralt might still return to the franchise yet.

We feared Geralt’s story was over; an end of an era that will have to come eventually in the video game adaptations, but always too soon for our liking. But it seems the developers aren’t quite done with the White Wolf either, with CD Projekt Red hinting that Geralt will appear in the upcoming title.

Codename Polaris, this game has been a long time coming; The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is eight years old now, which goes to show how long it’s been since we were able to jump into a new wealth of lore. Of course, we’ve had Netflix’s The Witcher to keep us company, with an anime version of the franchise on the way, but it’s still felt empty without the Geralt we know from the games.

Now that CD Projekt Red is finished with Cyberpunk 2077, its DLC a resounding success, it’s been confirmed that the remainder of that team has transitioned over to Polaris. In addition to that shift, director Sebastian Kalemba has promised that The Witcher 4 will be a great “entry point” for new fans. “I believe I can say it'll be an excellent entry point for many players, without forgetting the long-time fans who still wish to follow Geralt's adventures.”

See how Geralt was mentioned? Even if we get only flashbacks, that would make us happy. However, as with all good news, an equal amount of bad comes along with it. Kalemba continued, “The Witcher 4 won't be out for some years, and it'll [have been] a long time since the previous one, so we cannot just target the audience already fond of the saga. We must also build a new community.”

As pleasing as it is that newcomers will be welcomed as well as returning players, it sucks knowing there are still many years between us and the return of Geralt. Thank goodness, the new anime will be on Netflix from late 2024.
