Xbox 360 store officially closing forever, RIP our childhood

Disappointing news for Xbox fans, as the Xbox 360 store is the next digital marketplace to hit the chopping block.

Earlier this week Nintendo fans mourned the death of the Wii U and 3DS, both of which had their online support ripped away, and now without a moment to spare the Xbox 360 store has been marked for death next.

While it was officially announced last year, the official Xbox website has a warning for those who still use services tied to the Xbox 360 store.

The message reads: “The Xbox 360 Store and the Xbox 360 Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com) will be retired on July 29, 2024.”

This means after the date in July you’ll be unable to access any content that’s purchasable through the Xbox 360, but fear not as you’ll still be able to use the content you’ve already paid for.

While most players will have likely moved onto the Xbox Series X/S, or at the very least the Xbox One, there’d bound to be plenty of users whom this store closure will affect, not to mention how heartbreaking it’ll be to see the store’s departure.

It also means a number of Xbox 360 digital titles will become lost media, as plenty were never made backwards compatible.

Fans took to Twitter to share their disappointment and sorrow at the store’s closure, with one fan calling it “the end of an era - some epic game times then!”

Another user added: “That’s sad, I knew this day would come eventually. They are sun-setting a console that raised many of us in our favourite online games and made lifetime friends.”

Finally one user said the “Xbox 360 was the best console I ever had. We all knew the day would come.”

Fans have until 29 July to purchase anything they want to keep from the Xbox 360 store, before it’s gone for good.
