Some PlayStation owners may be eligible for compensation from Sony surrounding news that the conglomerate could be facing a $7.9 billion lawsuit over store prices.
Sony is not having the best few days after it was recently revealed the Japanese company would be facing a multi-billion pound lawsuit following a decision made by the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal. The decision comes after accusations that Sony was imposing unfair terms on developers by taking a 30% cut. Additionally, it has also been accused of “abusing gamer’s loyalty” by raising consumer prices in recent years.

The lawsuit - filed back in August 2022 by consumer rights advocate Alex Neill - has been labelled as “flawed from start to finish” by Sony lawyers. However, despite the company’s legal team planning to fight the ruling “every step of the way”, the tribunal has decreed the case will go ahead.

As a result of the class action lawsuit, PlayStation customers may also receive compensation. If you were one of the 8.9 million customers who made a PlayStation Store purchase between August 19, 2016 and August 19, 2022, you could be eligible for anything from £67 to £562, plus interest.
However, with the lawsuit expected to run for several years, it may be a while before you see the money but if you are eligible, you should keep an eye on proceedings.
It will definitely be an interesting few years for Sony as a result of the accusations made by Neill. However, the class action representative is yet to have any regrets. “This is the first step in ensuring consumers get back what they’re owed as a result of Sony breaking the law,” he claimed. “PlayStation gamers’ loyalty has been taken advantage of by Sony who have been charging them excessive prices for years.”
“It is significant that the competition court has recognised Sony must explain its actions by ordering them to trial. With this action we are seeking to put a stop to this unlawful conduct and ensure customers are compensated.”
