Mark this date in your diary, people: March 3, 2020. That's when we'll be (finally) playing the long-anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake - and, yes, that does still appear to be its official name, "Remake" and all.
Publishers Square Enix put out a press release to coincide with the holding of a Final Fantasy VII - A Symphonic Reunion show at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, last night. It gives us the release date, and also a cool new piece of key art, showing (one of) the game's antagonist(s) Sephiroth stood before a burning Midgar. Subtle!
Brand-new footage of the game was shown during the concert, which you can watch below. It features early moments in the game's story, revealing more of how this 1997 PlayStation classic has been updated for the modern era. But what we still don't know is whether or not, for sure, the Remake is still episodic.
As, if it is (and we are assuming it is, as that's been the messaging to this point), March 3 is going to be both an amazing day, and a disappointment - or, it *could* be, depending on how long we're left waiting for episode two. We don't want to be waiting a year between instalments, please.
Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive back at E3 2015. Grown men cried, it was quite something. Game director Tetsuya Nomura has said that revealing the game in 2015 was too much, too soon, and it should have been kept under wraps for longer. But, Cait Sith properly out of the bag, the hype's been growing ever since - and it seems that the reward for all this waiting is almost with us.
And we'll likely know more about Remake really soon, as Square Enix's own E3 press conference takes place at 6pm Pacific Time today - which means muggins here is going to be staring at it from his front room in the south of England at, oh god, 2am. I'm so tired, so tired.
