PlayStation 5 Will Run For At Least Seven Years, Exec Hints

Gen will it end?

The PlayStation 5 might have only just launched, but I'm sure plenty of you are already wondering when this particular generation will start to wind down. After all, you've just forked out a few hundred quid for this new machine and I'm sure you want to know you're getting bang for your buck and access to at least several years of support.

The good news is that sounds like the PS5 will run for as long as the last few generations of Sony consoles have lasted for - which is to say around six or seven years. In a new interview with GQ, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan was pressed on the future of the brand when he hinted at the new console's potential longevity.

"It seems that I've spent most of my life at PlayStation listening to people tell me that this generation is going to be the last one because something else is going to make the console model redundant," Ryan said when asked about where console gaming is going next. "I'm sure these people are really wise and really intelligent but to date they haven't been correct."

"Since we've got serious about talking to the world about PS5 it just makes me really positive about the future that awaits over the course of the next five, six, seven years and after that, who knows? I think the cloud will probably become more important over the course of the next few years, even though there are still business model and technology challenges. As that happens we're continuing our studies and our investment and looking at this very carefully."

It's certainly good to know Ryan is already thinking that the PS5 will be around for a while yet, and the seven-year mark isn't too far off previous PlayStation generations. The PlayStation 4 released in 2013, meaning it enjoyed a nice seven-year run before the PS5 came along to relieve it.

It's also worth pointing out that Sony has already promised to continue supporting the PS4 for at least the next few years, so we can proabbly expect the same kind of overlap between the PS5 and PS6 - assuming Sony does make another conventional home console. For now let's just enjoy the PS5 and see where this generation takes us, shall we?
