It still seems incredible to me to think about this, but the PlayStation and Xbox Series consoles are out in a matter of weeks. Obviously this means retailers far and wide have started making space in stores (those things people over a certain age still go to) for the consoles, controllers, games, and various other accessories.
We still don't know how much useable storage Sony's next-gen console features, although reports claim that 664GB of the console's total 825GB can be used for storing games and apps. Now, thanks to a new listing from Walmart, we may have an idea of just how much it'll cost to expand the PS5's storage at launch. An image that's been doing the rounds recently shows off a 500GB SSD card for PS5, but it's not exactly cheap.
As you can see below, consumers would be looking at $115 (just shy of £90) for the extra 500GB.
The Xbox Series X/S will also give players the option to buy expandable storage. The Series X has a built-in 1TB of SSD storage, while the Series S boasts a much smaller 512GB. It's still not entirely clear how much of that space will be free to use, but if you want more, you're going need to pay out a whopping $219.99 (around £170) for an additional 1TB of extra space. Given the Xbox's 1TB is roughly twice the amount of the above 500GB, the prices seem to line up reliably.

Of course, there can't be many gamers out there who'd be happy giving up their money for a 500GB expansion, especially given the ballooning install sizes of modern video games. It's likely the leaked 500GB is the cheaper (probably even the cheapest) option on shelves, and that Sony will also offer 1TB cards for roughly the same price as Microsoft.
Sure enough, a separate series of listings from last month reveal that Western Digital will offer SSD upgrades $149.99, $229.99, and $449.99 for 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB models respectively. While these prices don't quite match up with the Walmart listing, it's worth noting that Sony has made it so that the PS5 will work with a number of specifically whitelisted SSDs, so expect some competitive pricing and make sure to examine all the options before you make any purchases this November.
