PS6 release date seemingly revealed amid Microsoft Activision FTC trial

It’s already time to start thinking about the next generation of consoles, apparently. Even though Sony and Microsoft’s current-gen consoles are only just approaching their third birthdays, new information revealed during Microsoft’s fight to acquire Activision Blizzard seems to have confirmed when the PS6 will be releasing.

I doubt that many PS5 owners will have even contemplated when they’re going to be able to get their hands on a PS6. After all, it was only this year that PS5s became readily available in stores after more than two years of stock issues. As such, many gamers have probably only just bought one of Sony’s current-gen consoles within the last few months, but if you fall into this category, don’t worry. By the sound of it, we’re going to be waiting quite some time for the next generation of consoles to release.

IGN reports that in court documents from Microsoft’s battle against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to justify its planned acquisition of Activision, Microsoft stated that the “expected starting period” of the next console generation is 2028. It goes without saying that this is the expected release window, so things could change between now and then. However, this date does line up with previously released court documents which suggested that Sony intends to release the PS6 sometime after 2027.

When we look at the pattern of Sony’s console releases over the years, this sort of time period makes a lot of sense. However, previously, the longest gap between any two generations of PlayStation consoles was seven years. That means that if the PS6 releases beyond November 2027, we’ll be facing the biggest gap we’ve ever had between Sony’s console generations.

Regardless of the exact date, it sounds like we’ll be waiting quite some time before the next generation consoles is even revealed, never mind released, so don’t go expecting an announcement any time soon.
