As much as everyone loves the Red Dead series, it’s not exactly been having the greatest time lately. In fact, basically all the publicity its been getting this year is from fans complaining - #SaveRedDeadOnline has been a truly inescapable phrase if you’ve ventured remotely close to Twitter at all in the last few months.
Thankfully though, if you enjoy your fair share of rootin’, and possibly also tootin’, have I got news for you. As reported by GamingLeaksAndRumours, journalist Chris Klippel has claimed that as well as the rumoured next-gen upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 (which was first brought to light last week), there’s also a remake of Red Dead Redemption in the works.

“Responding to several private messages at once: As I was able to confirm at the end of 2020, work on the next-gen port #RDR2 has indeed been going on for several months at Rockstar. With the project of the remaster / remake of the first RDR,” the journalist tweeted (as translated by GamingLeaksAndRumours). “The RDR2 port was to be announced much earlier. The announcement was clearly postponed due to the RDR remaster / remake. I don’t know anything else about it, except that the project is still running and won’t be called ‘Outlaws Collection’.”
I think we can all agree that Red Dead Redemption is incredibly deserving of a remake - the excellent action-adventure first released 12 years ago (to the day, as it happens), and followed the exploits of former outlaw John Marston.

Coincidentally, earlier this week, a fan-made remake of the game went viral online, and gave us a gorgeous glimpse of what the real thing could actually look like. Made in Unreal Engine 5, the environments and scenery have never looked better - check it out here.
Back to the rumour though, as always, remember to take all the information with a generous fistful of salt until anything official is confirmed, but that might not actually take too long. When recently asked about the state of Red Dead Online, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that “more will be said by Rockstar in due time” about new content, so we’ll just have to stay tuned to see if either of these projects are revealed.
