Sony Are Looking To Acquire Square Enix, Insiders Say

Sony appear to be looking to scoop up Square Enix after the studio sold off its western developers and several major IPs earlier this week.

Just days after Square Enix hit the acquisition news headlines, they’ve only gone and done it again. There seems to be an acquisition happening everywhere you look in the gaming world right now, and we could have another one on our hands imminently.

In case you missed it, Square Enix sold its North American studios - Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montreal - to The Embracer Group for $300 million earlier this week, along with several major IPs including Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. According to insiders, what’s left of Square Enix could now be acquired by Sony.

Square Enix's Forspoken will now release in October after its May release was delayed. Check out the trailer below.

Rumours of another Sony acquisition have been circling for quite some time now. To date, plenty of theories have been thrown around including Kojima Productions and Ubisoft but according to sources, Sony is looking to scoop up Square Enix.

Former IGN editor Greg Miller recently appeared on the PS I Love You show and opened up about the potential acquisition. He said, “When I talked about the three rumours I’d heard and one was an acquisition, this was the one that I had heard. I had heard that PlayStation was acquiring Square [Enix]. I heard that from multiple different sources.”

The belief is that Square Enix shed its western studios and some of its IPs to ‘slim down,’ making it a more attractive acquisition target.

PlayStation and Square Enix have a long-standing history so a Sony acquisition would make sense. Outside of PC releases, a number of titles including the Final Fantasy VII Remake and the upcoming Forspoken are both PlayStation console exclusives. If Sony were to acquire Square Enix, the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises - amongst others - could potentially be added to PlayStation’s exclusive roster.

Of course, this all has to be taken with a pinch of salt until anything is officially confirmed by either Square Enix or Sony. Something must come of Sony’s ongoing acquisition rumour eventually though, surely.
