Star Wars Jedi: Survivor features a Metroid Easter egg

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor features a Metroid Easter egg

Fans have spotted a reference to the SNES classic Super Metroid in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

If you’ve already set out on Cal Kestis’ latest adventure in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (or are going to soon), you might want to keep an eye out for this subtle reference to Nintendo’s beloved action-adventure series Metroid (more specifically, the third game - Super Metroid).

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is either one of the greatest games of the year or one of the biggest disappointments so far, depending on what platform you’re playing on. On PC, the game launched with loads of performance issues, which prompted many to review bomb the game on Steam with criticisms such as: “Runs like my ass after Taco Bell.” Yikes. Thankfully, a patch has already been rolled out, which will hopefully help smooth things out a bit.

Take a look at our video review for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor below.

On other platforms though, the game really is a treat. GAMINGbible’s Will McCue gave it a nine out of 10 in his review (he played on PS5), and wrote: “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an exceptional sequel, improving on every gripe fans had with Fallen Order while adding countless new features in that’ll keep players engrossed for a long, long time. It’ll take something really special to come out to stop Survivor being the best action/adventure game of 2023.”

Now, as ComicBook reports, eagle-eyed fans have spotted that one short section of Jedi: Survivor makes clear reference to the 1994 SNES classic Super Metroid. As highlighted by Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb on Twitter, one small moment sees a group of Boglings demonstrate to Cal how to wall jump, just like how three Etecoons show Samus how to do the same in Super Metroid.

What’s more, this has actually been confirmed to be a direct reference. Adding to the Twitter thread, freelance writer James Galizio tweeted: “I literally asked the devs about it during the preview event (it was part of the preview content, too) and was told in no uncertain terms ‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a Metroidvania, after all.’”

How neat is that? It makes you wonder what other cool references the game is hiding.
