Starfield has received its latest free download and it's available now

In a year that has arguably seen the best quality video game releases in recent memory, it’s even hard to forget that a mammoth of a game such as Starfield only launched a few months ago.

According to Bethesda, Starfield has been over 20 years in the making and finally in September 2023 it graced its presence on PC and Xbox Series X|S. Did Starfield live up to the hype? Well, that all depends on who you ask. Regardless, there is still plenty of fun in the game dubbed to be Fallout and The Elder Scrolls in space.

Check out the Starfield trailer below

In our review of Starfield, we said: “The journey you embark on will dazzle you, and I have no doubt that players will be gripped for months, perhaps even years to come. Here is a playground where you can be whoever you want to be. I simply cannot stop thinking about Starfield and the wondrous secrets it still holds.”

However, no matter how good a game may or may not be at launch, the likelihood is that it will receive at least one post-release patch. Such a patch can be deployed for several reasons whether it is to fix unforeseen and reported bugs or even add new features, and Starfield is no exception. After all, Bethesda games throughout the years are known for bugs and glitches, for better or worse.

With that in mind, Update 1.8.8 has arrived that makes improvements to gameplay, and outposts and fixes a reported issue related to saving and loading data. As detailed on Bethesda.net, Update 1.8.8 improves the following:

  • Gameplay: Addressed an issue that would cause space matter to become stuck to the player's ship during space travel. Loading a save will now remove the space clingon. Please note: This fix should address any space matter being stuck in your travels, but not in instances where player ships have New Atlantis attached. A fix for that will be released in a later update.
  • Outpost: Fixed an issue that prevents random guns from spawning in a newly created Weapon Case after loading a save.
  • Save/Load: [MSS/Xbox] Fixed an issue where players could experience crashes while saving during long playthroughs without going through the Unity.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Update 1.8.8 is pretty much the same deal that arrived with the Beta Patch on PC on 1 December, so you need not worry about downloading this update if you already participate in that beta. Otherwise, the latest update should fire up the next time you venture into Starfield, unless the update was already downloaded while in sleep mode.

Starfield is out now on PC and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at no extra cost.
