Steam, PS5's next major RPG is more than double the length of entirety of Game Of Thrones

Steam, PS5's next major RPG is more than double the length of entirety of Game Of Thrones

Baldur's Gate III is set to release on PS5 and Steam (in full) this year, and it's going to be enormous.

What’s your definition of a long video game? I imagine that if you asked a room of people that very question, their answers would vary significantly depending on the sorts of games they like to play. For many, 30 hours of playtime is plenty long enough for any title, whereas others aren’t satisfied unless they can spend at least 100 hours uncovering everything a game has to offer.

Well, if you thought that going for 100% completion in Cyberpunk 2077 took a while, or even that the amount of time required to complete the main story of Persona 5 Royal was huge, then one upcoming RPG from Larian Studios is about to take things to the next level. Baldur’s Gate III is set to leave early access later this year, and the devs have just confirmed that the cinematics alone will take over 170 hours to watch. Good lord.

Take a look at the trailer for Baldur’s Gate III below.

As reported by VG247, Larian Studios product manager Emily Gera took to the PlayStation Blog yesterday (29 June) to confirm the sheer scale of the game. To put it into perspective, all eight seasons of Game of Thrones take just over 70 hours to complete, which means you could watch the whole thing about two and a half times in the amount of time it’d take to view Baldur’s Gate III’s cutscenes. Gera revealed that there’s over three times more cinematic dialogue in the game than all three The Lord of the Rings books combined, which is also wild to imagine.

What’s more, it can’t be overstated that that’s the expected runtime for the cinematics alone. Fans will still have all the gameplay to experience on top of that. At this point, it’s not clear how much extra time that’ll add up to, but the full package is certainly going to be chonky.

Baldur’s Gate III is set to release on PS5 on 6 September, although those who buy the Deluxe Edition will be able to jump in three days early on 3 September. It'll leave early access on Steam on 3 August.
