'Stranger Things' Past Seasons Have Been Edited Without People Knowing

They George Lucased that mother

Stranger Things creators and showrunners the Duffer brothers have revealed that they actually went back and re-edited past episodes of the show.

In a recent interview, the duo admitted that they made a pretty big mistake by "forgetting" Will Byers' Birthday. The second season of the Netflix show established it as March 22, while Stranger Things most recent season claimed it was actually in May.

In response to this error, Matt Duffer told Variety that they can just go back and change the season two episode where the March Birthday was mentioned, by editing Joyce Byers' line so that she says "May" instead.

"That would be us George Lucas-ing the situation,” Matt said, in reference to the fact that Star Wars creator George Lucas became infamous for constantly fiddling with the original trilogy as new technology became available. This included welcome changes, like enhanced visual effects, colour mixes, and audio, but also added in utterly unnecessary shit. Fans won't soon forget the indignity of editing A New Hope to make it look like Han didn't shoot Greedo first.

While the Duffers don't appear to have done anything quite as bold as that, they did tease that they've changed things people still don't know about.

“You do have the physical copies though, the Blu-rays and stuff - you’d have to compare," Ross Duffer explained.

Ross added that they also made changes to the first part of season four not that long after it had been released, though stressed it was visual effects and not story content.

“Netflix is — I don’t think they’ve ever allowed people to patch on opening week and even weekend. And we said, ‘Well, why not?’ And he said, ‘Well, it makes us nervous.’ And we’re like, ‘Well, maybe we try it this time.’ And it turned out fine.”

No doubt the Stranger Things superfans out there will be flocking to their blu-ray collections over the coming days in an effort to work out what, exactly, the Duffers altered in those earlier episodes. I look forward to seeing what they find.
