The Witcher producer explains Liam Hemsworth's introduction as Geralt

The Witcher producer explains Liam Hemsworth's introduction as Geralt

Executive producer Tomek Baginski says that Liam Hemsworth's introduction as Geralt will tie into lore from The Witcher books.

We’re getting dangerously close to saying goodbye to Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt of Rivia, and personally, I don’t know if I’m emotionally ready.

The third season of The Witcher commences this Thursday, 29 June. Well, the first part of it anyway. The season is being split into two volumes, with the first five episodes releasing this week, and the final three making their debut on 27 July. Although it’s not going to be the end of Netflix’s The Witcher series, it certainly will be the end of an era, as beyond those eight episodes, Cavill is stepping down, and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.

Take a look at the trailer for The Witcher season three below.

Speaking to Yahoo UK in a new interview, executive producer Tomasz 'Tomek' Bagiński spoke about Cavill’s departure, and interestingly, about how Hemsworth is going to be introduced into the show. After all, Geralt is going to look very different, and it sounds like that’s going to be directly acknowledged in the episodes rather all of the characters simply pretending that nothing has changed.

“I don't want to get too emotional, but it was a great journey to have Henry Cavill on this show and we will miss him. But, at the same time, we have a very, very good plan to introduce our new Geralt and our new vision for Geralt with Liam,” Baginski said. “Not going deeply into those ideas because this will be a huge spoiler, [but] it's also very, very close to the meta ideas which are deeply embedded in the books, especially in book five.”

Baginski continued: “It's very lore accurate. It's very close to what was set out in the books and I think this change will be quite flawless. But at the same time it will be a new Geralt, it will be a new face for this character and I think it will also be very, very exciting to see.”

Previously, hundreds of thousands of Witcher fans signed a petition to keep Cavill in the show and fire the writers instead, which illustrates how tricky it’s going to be for the producers to introduce Hemsworth in a way that’s favourable. We’ll have to watch this space and see what happens.
