The highly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick comes exclusively to cinema screens this week and, as our review will tell you, it’s an ‘epic blockbuster for all’. Tom Cruise’s Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is back, and just as tenacious as he was back in 1986.
GAMINGbible sat down with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski to talk about the new movie, which the former describes as “a love letter to aviation”, and had to ask how the Mission Impossible actor has stayed at the top of his game for so long.

“He lives his life like a professional athlete”, Bruckheimer explains. “The way he trains, the way he eats, the kind of rest he gets for himself.” The producer continues: “He’s so passionate about filmmaking - loves it, that’s his life.”

This level of commitment isn’t something Bruckheimer sees often. He explains, “I work with so many actors who can’t wait to go home”, while Cruise, in contrast, is “part of every script meeting, part of all the technical things. He designed the program for the actors.”
Clearly, the star doesn’t hold back when it comes to acting. His role as the lead in Top Gun: Maverick feels perfectly suited to him, as both Cruise and his titular character have so much passion for what they do, and that definitely comes across on the screen.
It’s also an extremely immersive film. Director Joseph Kosinski says that the reason you may find yourself swaying as the jets fly on screen is because they shot it all “for real.” He explains: “What you’re seeing on the screen is the actor - you’re seeing all those forces on their body. I mean, you’re talking seven and a half G’s (g-force).”
The pressure that kind of g-force puts on a person - effectively their body weight multiplied by seven - is no joke, which makes it even more incredible that Tom Cruise is the one who came up with the program for getting the cast fit enough for such an undertaking.

Kosinski really hits home how impressive this all is by pointing out, “first of all, it’s something you’ve never seen on a film before, and it’s something you just can’t mimic shooting on a stage.” If this isn’t enough reason to see Top Gun: Maverick, nothing will convince you.
