Since the death of the acclaimed Manga creator Akira Toriyama, fans have been paying tribute around the world. Toriyama had a profound impact on the lives of millions through Dragon Ball and his contribution to video games. It has been no surprise that other Manga creators spoke in his memory citing Dragon Ball as a major influence on their work.
As many of us grew up watching Dragon Ball Z and its various iterations, the broadcaster Toonami will be showing a mini-marathon of Dragon Ball Z Kai on 16 March in tribute to Toriyama.
The Dragon Ball series has continued to expand in the world of video games
In a Facebook post Toonami said, “As a tribute to anime legend Akira Toriyama (1955-2024), we're celebrating his legacy Saturday night with a DBZ Kai marathon from 2 AM to 6 AM, may he rest in Super Saiyan power."

Dragon Ball Z Kai, while not the most familiar format, is the best-dubbed version of the Dragon Ball Z series. This is a re-cut version of the original show, featuring crisper animation and fully re-recorded dialogue. The episodes that will air contain the first death of Goku, the arrival of his brother Raditz, the introduction of Vegeta plus Goku's training under King Kai.
Akira Toriyama wasn’t only known for the long-running Dragon Ball series, he also supplied art direction and character designs for several video games including Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, and Blue Dragon. His unique style is instantly recognisable, and his characters will always hold a special place among players.
Throughout online games with his influence, players have been gathering in public spaces to hold vigils by posing in iconic Dragon Ball stances while each discussing Toriyama’s importance in their lives. It’s clear to see how many of us grew up with characters like Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and many more, growing alongside us.
