Game of Thrones Aegon's Conquest prequel series in development

Yet another Game of Thrones spin-off has entered development, this time centred around Aegon's conquest.

Yet another Game of Thrones spin-off has entered development. The question is, will it ever see the light of day?

Game of Thrones was pure magic. While the final season may not have pleased everyone, I think we can all agree that it was an absolutely stellar show. The theorising, the post episode dissections … We’re yet to find a successor that matches the hold that Game of Thrones had over the entertainment industry. Given the success of the series, critically and commercially, spin-offs felt almost guaranteed with House of the Dragon eventually hopping onto the scene back in 2022.

Yet to dive into House of the Dragon? You should.

House of the Dragon proved to be an instant success. While it’s got some way to go until it matches Thrones’ audience, the viewing figures were impressive enough that HBO renewed the spin-off for a second season after airing just two episodes - with that second season landing on our screens later this year. It now looks though as if HBO isn’t satisfied with simply having two Westerosian hits on its hands.

Yet another spin-off has entered development. Written by The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin, the series will focus on Aegon’s “brutal and bloody” conquest of Westeros. Game of Thrones aficionados will know that Aegon Targaryen conquered six of Westeros’ seven kingdoms, with Dorne the only territory that managed to hold out. Aegon is not to be confused with Aegon II who appears in House of the Dragon. The Targaryen’s do have a confusing habit of reusing the same names over and over again.

With that in mind, this latest spin-off would be the furthest we’ve gone back in Westeros’ timeline. The issue is that HBO does have a habit of announcing these spin-off ideas only for them to get stuck in development.

The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller was working on The Sea Snake, Kit Harrington was set to return in Snow, Ten Thousand Ships would’ve taken us back 1,000 years, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would’ve centred around the characters of Dunk and Egg, while the animated The Golden Empire was also in the works.

To state the obvious, none of these ideas are yet to make it as far as filming. Some are believed to have been shelved when HBO Max became simply Max. Others are just still in development. It’ll be interesting to see whether the latest spin-off idea proves to be a tad more successful.
