Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox thought he'd never return to the character

Charlie Cox is pleased to see the return of his Daredevil character on Disney Plus.

For many subscribers, the brutal and gritty Daredevil series was enough of a reason to cough up a monthly fee to catch the latest episode featuring the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.

So when the Netflix series was cancelled along with Marvel’s The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage it was a sad time for subscribers. The last episode of Daredevil to air on Netflix was in October 2018 and many fans feared that would be the last we’d see of Charlie Cox’s Matthew Murdock.

Alas, in 2022, Disney Plus announced that a reboot of Daredevil is on the way and it would star the returning Charlie Cox as Matthew Murdock as well as Vincent D'Onofrio's brilliant interpretation of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.

The new series is befittingly called Daredevil: Born Again, and this news excited fans who thought they’d never see the character return in a series ever again. Yet, back in October this year, Disney made the tough decision to scrap Daredevil: Born Again halfway through shooting to begin anew. I like to think that this decision was made in favour of making this series more mature, rather than the more child-friendly version of Matthew Murdock that was featured in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Hopefully, that decision will prove to be for the good of the series, and the return of Daredevil will be worth its weight in gold. However, much like the fans of the series, Charlie Cox also thought that he’d never return to the Daredevil character.

As reported by Comicbook.com, Charlie Cox was a guest on a panel at Wales Comic Con and shared his thoughts on the cancelled Netflix series and its upcoming return to Disney Plus. “I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over,” said Cox. “It had been a couple of years since [Daredevil was cancelled]. What I didn't know was there was an embargo on that. So, there was an amount of time – I think it was probably two years – after the show was cancelled before Disney and Marvel could approach us.”

“So, during that time, I didn't know that. I just thought it was over. And Vincent, who plays Wilson Fisk, and I would chat occasionally on the phone,” the actor explained. “And he would kind of say, 'I'm sure they're gonna bring us back.' I'd be on the phone being, like, 'Mate, the guy's delusional! He's got to let it go.'” So there you have it, we’re not the only ones pleasantly surprised that we’ll be graced with Daredevil and Kingpin once more, whenever that time may be.

At this moment in time, Daredevil: Born Again does not have a release date but it is expected to consist of 18 episodes. The original Daredevil series as well as The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders are all now available on Disney Plus.
