Spy Kids is being rebooted for Netflix

The world isn't ready.

The Spy Kids series is finally back with an all-new movie for Netflix, over a decade since the last film released.

Spy Kids is a series which sadly only got worse over time. The very first 2001 film was easily the best of the bunch, but since then, each sequel became slightly more painful, with the fourth and final instalment, 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World 4D, boasting an abysmal 21% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. For this reason, I’ll admit, I’m a little cautious of Netflix's upcoming Spy Kids reboot, Spy Kids: Armageddon.

Take a look at the trailer for Spy Kids: Armageddon right here.

Armageddon follows a whole new group of spies - Tango-Torrez family - including Spy Kids Tony and Patty (played by Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla, respectively), as well as their parents, Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez. The director of all the previous Spy Kids movies, Robert Rodriguez, is returning to direct once more - he’s co-written the script alongside his own son, Racer, and his son Rebel has composed the score (via Netflix Tudum).

But what’s the story this time around? According to the official synopsis: “When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.” All in all, that sounds pretty similar to what we’ve seen before, but that’s sort of to be expected.

Fans in the trailer’s YouTube comment section are cautiously optimistic: “This feels like a return to form, hopefully this has some good grounded moments and not just all silly moments,” blaze14ZX wrote. “As an OG fan, I’m extremely cautious! Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez sound promising! But I need more than that to be good,” manuelorozco7760 commented. “They better do justice to this,” added rotcivikiasAKAsaiking.

Spy Kids: Armageddon is set to release exclusively on Netflix on 22 September - don’t miss it.
