Star Wars: Taika Waititi promises his film will 'piss people off'

Director Taika Waititi has promised that his upcoming Star Wars film will 'piss people off'.

Director Taika Waititi is in the midst of penning his own Star Wars film. However, he warns fans that his take on the popular franchise will probably “piss people off”.

Best known for directing movies such as Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi will be the next director heading a Star Wars entry with a currently untitled project. With the 2019 Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker receiving mixed reviews, both Waititi and Lucasfilm will have a lot of expectations on their shoulders.

At the time of writing this, the untitled Star Wars movie is in development and Waititi himself was excited to get on with it when he was asked back in May this year. "I've got a really good idea for it," he said before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes kicked off. "It's just as with all films, it's this middle part. You're like, 'What's going to happen?' And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you're like, 'Well, I guess they can't meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.'"

Now a few months on, Waititi believes some fans may have strong opinions about his movie. "It will be … dramatic pause… a Taika Waititi film," the director told Variety at the premiere of Searchlight's Next Goal Wins. "It's gonna piss people off."

Additionally, the filmmaker was interviewed by Rolling Stone about his unwillingness to rush the project. "I saw on Twitter, someone's like: I'd actually really love to see a movie about Chewbacca's grandmother. And I was like, I shouldn't have said that because this is awesome," Waititi said. "But I just feel like for me, I'm never gonna please the fans."

He continued, "You know, I don't want to mess with something that's so treasured. Also, you feel like you've got to do a lot of research…and I don't have any time. [Laughs] I mean, there's thousands of books that have been written, these volumes of books about Star Wars with all those characters. I just don't have time to get through them."

The unnamed project is yet to receive a title or a release date. However, with Taika Waititi at the helm, it is sure to be talked about for years to come.
