Popular WW2 Shooter Changes Name And Releases Free On Steam Today

It’s not unusual for games to go free-to-play. PUBG: Battlegrounds decided to make the big jump earlier this year, as did Knockout City. Much more recently, Fall Guys followed suit with epic results, garnering 20 million players in its first 48 hours of free-to-play. Well, you can now add Battalion 1944 to the list.

Bulkhead’s popular World War II shooter Battalion 1944 is officially going free-to-play as the studio have severed ties with publisher Square Enix. The game will be rebranded as BATTALION: Legacy and is due to release on Steam today.

Reflecting on the news, the developers wrote, “We have formally ended our relationship with Square Enix. We want to start this exciting new chapter where we began, focusing on the players. With this in mind, we will be releasing BATTALION: Legacy free on Steam.”

Bulkhead went on to explain that this means that Battalion 1944 will now no longer be released on consoles. “We are deeply disappointed that Battalion 1944 never made it to console and we will be refunding all console Kickstarter backers. Thank you to everyone that backed the console version and we’re sorry it has taken so long to rectify this,” they added.

“We appreciate the passionate support we received from the fans of Battalion and old-school shooters. We hope you continue with us on our journey to making first person shooters that are built with the community and the players at the heart of development.” Well, if you were hoping to check the franchise out, now is the perfect time.
