Forza Horizon 5 is a runaway success and has soared to the top of review aggregator charts, beating titles like It Takes Two, Metroid Dread and Ratchet & Clank to become the highest-rated new game of 2021.
Jetting off to the gorgeous and diverse locales of Mexico, Dean absolutely adored his time in the racing sim. “On one drive you could be travelling through the desert and be hit by a sandstorm, making you feel like you’ve entered the world of Mad Max,” he said in his review. “Or you could be driving through Ancient Mayan ruins and a lightning storm strikes, making you feel like you’re in Roland Emmerich’s disaster film 2012.”

A lot of other outlets agreed with Dean that the game delivers a simply unbelievable experience on the Xbox Series X and that every fan of the series and of the genre should give it a go. Right now, Forza Horizon 5 has overtaken Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Psychonauts 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart to be the highest-rated console exclusive title on OpenCritic.
On Metacritic, it sits in sixth place, yet the handful of titles ahead of it are Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, The House in Fata Morgana, Tetris Effect Connected and Hades which are all re-releases of their original versions. As a result, it’s technically top of the pile with Psychonauts 2, meaning it’s a very good time to own an Xbox.
In fact, if we keep scrolling through the highest rated games of this year on Metacritic, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the first time we see a PlayStation exclusive in seventeenth place on the list. Though it might sound like there’s a significant disparity between Forza Horizon 5 and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the former scored an average of 91 and the latter scored an average of 89.
