Starfield
As a first-person shooter with heavy RPG elements, Starfield does a great job of slotting in for the Far Cry games. Both feature a large open-world structure that takes you to interesting places to meet great characters. Starfield does differ in that it’s a sci-fi RPG, so it takes players to many different worlds to discover alien races or undiscovered treasures, rather than focusing solely on one slice of the world in great detail. If explosive action is on your agenda and you prefer science over nature, this Bethesda adventure is well worth exploring.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Another RPG from Bethesda, this time channeling medieval fantasy and killing huge dragons. Skyrim has become known as a shining example of how to create RPGs - a vast world to explore, interesting quests, and enjoyable combat. There’s a reason the game has been released on practically every platform out there. It’s a game with hundreds of hours of potential stored away just waiting for you to stumble across a cave full of skeletons that leads to a lengthy questline. With so many ways to play, from spell-slinging wizardry to sword-swinging melee, Skyrim is endlessly replayable.
Just Cause 4
Open-world, check. Sandbox gameplay, check. Chaotic weaponry, check. Set in a far-off locale, check. It seems Just Cause 4 shares a lot with the Far Cry franchise, although Just Cause 4 sets itself apart due to the wild stuff you can achieve just using what you find in the world. Once upon a time, Just Cause was a very serious action-adventure. Nowadays, it’s seen as a game where the only limit for completing tasks, is your imagination. There’s the feeling of a blockbuster action film here - bombastic weapons, wingsuits, parachutes, and a huge South American world to play in.
Sea of Thieves
Okay, so this one is a bit left-field, but stick with us. Sea of Thieves has everything you could want; a large ocean full of unique and interesting islands; buried treasures to find, a wealth of PvP should you choose it; plus, you live the life of a pirate, which is always good. But seriously, Sea of Thieves has long questlines, ships to personalise, it can be played with several friends, there are great minigames to play, and a depth of quests that will challenge even the best players out there. Sure, it’s not quite an action RPG, but once you’ve spent some time here and earned yourself some gold, you’ll see why it’s on this list.
Ghostwire Tokyo
We’ve covered fantasy and sci-fi RPGs on this list, but taking you to a spooky, rain-drenched Tokyo changes things up a lot. Ghostwire Tokyo feels a bit emptier than any of the Far Cry games because humans have been disappearing from this haunted version of Tokyo. All that’s left are Yokai (ghosts) and cute doggos, and it’s your job to solve the mysteries of this world while utilising brilliant fighting moves with a dash of supernatural abilities. There’s a lot to see in this open-world and the story takes you to emotional places you might not have expected, all while being suitably creepy, too.
