28 Years Later zombie sequel teased by writer and director

Over 20 years on from the release of the British post-apocalyptic horror, 28 Days Later, a third zombie film is finally on the cards, which will apparently move past the slightly rubbish 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later.

Speaking to Inverse, the director and writer of 2002’s 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, have teased that they’ve been contemplating the idea of a third film for some time now. The two weren’t involved in the production of 28 Weeks Later, which as fans will know, wasn’t nearly as good as the first. In fact, Garland revealed that the sequel almost put him off from returning to the series.

“A few years ago an idea materialised in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later,” Garland said. “Danny [Boyle] always liked the idea.”

“So we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently,” Boyle added. “If he doesn’t want to direct it himself I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea.”

“I resisted [making a sequel] for a long time because there were things about 28 Weeks that bugged me,” Garland continued. “I just thought, ‘F**k that. I’d rather try to write a different story in a different world.’”

Speaking of zombie movie sequels, English actor and comedian Simon Pegg recently addressed the overwhelming demand for a follow-up to Shaun of the Dead, although he didn’t give the response that everyone’s been hoping for for the last 19 years. In an interview with The Guardian, he said: “If I ever do an Instagram Live or whatever, people are always like, ‘I need Shaun of the Dead 2 in my life.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you don’t f***king need Shaun of the Dead 2! The last thing you need is Shaun of the Dead 2! It’s done. Move on!’”

Back to 28 Years Later, and it should be noted that Garland and Boyle’s comments don’t mean that anything is officially in motion yet. However, if they can hold out on releasing it until 2030, then the film would be able to come out at the perfect time, given its proposed title. I really want to see it happen, even if only for that.
