A sequel to 28 Days Later, called 28 Years Later, is officially in the works to revive the beloved horror franchise.

While zombies are a staple of the horror genre nowadays, a few years ago they were relatively new to TV and film, and they were actually quite scary. While classics like Shaun Of The Dead, Dawn Of The Dead and other films with “dead” in the title, were exceptionally good at telling apocalypse stories, one film arguably did it better, 28 Days Later.

Starring Cillian Murphy as the lead role, 28 Days Later (2002) tells the tale of a hospital patient called Jim, who awakes from a coma to find the streets of London have been abandoned. A virus, later called the “rage virus” has swept the population, transforming the majority of people into hyper-aggressive zombies. Without getting into too much detail on the rest of the plot, the film ends on an optimistic note as the zombies start to die of starvation.

It was followed up a few years later by a sequel called 28 Weeks Later, which shows the aftermath of the virus as well as kicks of a new outbreak. Despite being set in the same world, Cillian Murphy didn’t reprise his role as Jim, with the film following a group of new survivors.

Now though, another sequel called 28 Years Later is supposedly entering production. Reported by THR, the directors of the first film Danny Boyle and Alex Garland will reportedly be pitching a full trilogy of films to interested production companies this month.

If the trilogy goes ahead, Danny Boyle will return to direct the first film though it’s unknown if he’ll stick around to direct the rest if the first film is successful enough.

It’s also unknown if Cillian Murphy will return as Jim, though the actor has expressed interest in being part of another zombie-flick, should the opportunity arise.

While we wait for confirmation though, if you haven’t seen 28 Days Later or its sequel you absolutely should, they’re well worth the watch especially if you’re a fan of zombie films.
