First released over twenty years ago, a 28 Days Later sequel has finally been confirmed at Sony, reportedly bringing back Cillian Murphy in both a producing and acting capacity.
28 Days Later was a 2002 British post-apocalyptic horror movie that followed Jim (Cillian Murphy) who awakes from a coma only to find himself in a London that was now affected by a deadly virus, turning its victims into braindead killers. Directed by Danny Boyle, the movie went on to receive positive reviews from critics and audiences alike so it was no wonder it received a sequel titled 28 Weeks Later in 2007.

Both movies were successful so it only seems right that twenty years on, another sequel has finally been confirmed by Sony. Tilted 28 Years Later, the movie will see Boyle and writer Alex Garland at the helm with Murphy returning as an executive producer and reports claim he may return in an acting capacity too.

Although there are no more details on the sequel, we do know that there may be two new movies on the cards with both reportedly receiving a $60 million budget.
Fans of the movies may not be surprised at this news as rumours have been swirling for a while, especially as Garland himself spoke about the possibility in a 2023 interview.
"A few years ago, an idea materialised in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later," Garland said at the time. "Danny always liked the idea. So, we're talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn't want to direct it himself, I'll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea."
Not only that but Murphy himself said he would be prepared to return to the movie that kicked off his acting career. "I would never say never," he said. "I loved to make that movie. Was a long time ago. But sure [I would like to return.]"

It will be a while until we get to see 28 Years Later, but after a 20-plus year wait, it has a lot of expectations to live up to.
