Mario star Anya Taylor-Joy learned English by watching School Of Rock

I think we can all agree that Anya Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of Peach is the best thing to happen to the Mushroom Kingdom’s beloved princess.

Even though some games like Super Princess Peach have allowed Peach to be the star of the show and generally be less reliant on Mario and the gang, the version of her that we see in The Super Mario Bros. Movie waves goodbye to that tired damsel in distress trope once and for all. Taylor-Joy was a big part of this change - her voice acting has truly breathed new life Peach in the best way possible, and in our interview with her, she told us that she “didn’t really want to do [the film]” if this wasn’t the direction that the filmmakers wanted to take the character.

As we all know, another of The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s big stars is Jack Black, who voices Mario’s nemesis, Bowser. In a recent interview with Buzzfeed UK, Taylor-Joy revealed that it was thanks to one of her co-star’s movies that she learned how to speak English when she first moved to London after living in Argentina.

“At the school I went to when I first moved to London they would play School of Rock every Friday. At that time, I didn't really speak much English, if any, so that and Harry Potter and Jumanji are like how I learned English,” she said.

With that in mind, it’s no wonder that Taylor-Joy has so much respect for Black. In our interview, she told us: “I've done a bit of press with Jack Black, and I was so not cool. I was just so excited to meet him. I'm such a big fan, and I very seldom get starstruck, but I was just like, ‘This is great! This is so cool!’ He was a big childhood hero of mine.”
