Arma fans, grab your weapons - it’s time.
I know what you’re thinking, and no, unfortunately, Arma: Spearhead 1944 isn’t the brand new, official name for Arma 4. Arma 4 is in development, mind you - it was officially confirmed in May last year by Bohemia Interactive alongside Arma Reforger, which was released out of nowhere right there and then in early access. Reforger is said to be the “first step towards Arma 4 and a versatile, creative, fully-moddable platform for the future, offering a glimpse of things to come”.

Arma: Spearhead 1944 isn’t actually a new game at all - instead, it’s official Creator DLC for Arma 3. Basically, it’s been created by an external developer (in this case, Heavy Ordnance Works) but is being published by Bohemia Interactive, so you know that it should meet the original devs’ high standards. The DLC will take players to Normandy during World War II.

“Grab your rifle and prepare to deploy to Normandy where you’ll experience World War II combat with the grand scale and intense realism that only the Arma platform can deliver,” the DLC’s synopsis reads on Steam. “Spearhead 1944 places you in the boots of the soldiers fighting to break out from a tenuous foothold in the hellish maze of the bocage to liberate occupied Normandy.
“Play your way, with a wide array of iconic weapons and vehicles,” it continues. “Join the fight for liberation, or hold your ground across a new 150 km2 representation of real-world terrain based on inland Normandy. Command a tank, light up your flamethrower, dial in your sniper scope, or grab your medical supplies.”
Players will be able to experience a huge new co-op campaign inspired by the real-life Operation Cobra (up to 24 players will be able to join in at once), a single-player scenario based on the French Resistance, or duke it out in multiplayer modes.
There’s no set release date for Arma: Spearhead 1944 right now, its Steam page simply states that it’s “coming soon”, so watch this space.
