Assassin's Creed Red Dead-style Wild West setting leaves fans unsure

Assassin's Creed Red Dead-style Wild West setting leaves fans unsure

Assassin's Creed fans are split over whether they'd like to see the franchise journey to the American West.

Assassin’s Creed fans have gathered to discuss which unexplored time period the franchise could tackle next, with one Wild West themed suggestion splitting opinion.

We already know what’s next for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Codename Red will take players to Feudal Japan, and is reportedly set to star a male samurai and female shinobi. The male samurai is possibly based on the real life figure of Yasuke. Ubisoft is holding its cards close to its chest for now, but it’s believed that Codename Red will get a full reveal this summer ahead of a release later this year. Beyond that, Codename Hexe will seemingly take on a witchy theme, with rumours that it may be set in the early 1600s, but where else could the franchise take us?

Take a look at the teaser trailer for Assassin’s Creed Codename Red below.

Well, Reddit user noah_the_mighty wants to see the franchise venture to the American West. “Hear me out, Wild West Assassin’s Creed,” he began. “Ok so, we already established the American Brotherhood, but that was waaaaay back in the revolutionary period. I think it would be really cool to explore the history of the American West in the AC world. There are so many different outlaws and cowboys during the time period who would make both awesome enemies and surprising historical figures as templars and assassins.”

It’s an idea that’s split opinion. User viniremesso was dubious, writing, “What about the Wild West is so inviting to AC? Seriously, the main weapon in the era wasn’t blades, but guns (it would turn into a third person cover shooter). For parkour, [it] would be a worse setting than Valhalla. [...] Stealth? There aren’t silencers, so an Assassin going full Django wouldn’t make sense.” The stealth and parkour points are definitely worth making.

“I love the concept, I just don’t think it could work. We already have the perfect cowboy game in RDR2 and I just don’t see any Assassin’s Creed elements fitting in that setting. Not enough density with cities,” added Linky38. I’m in agreement. While on paper, a Wild West Assassin’s Creed sounds like a recipe for cool, I can’t quite see it working in practice. As a starting block though, it would be interesting to see the franchise venture back to the States. There was a lot to like about Assassin’s Creed III.
