Call Of Duty: Black Ops dev Terry Hess has died

Game developer Terry Hess, known for his work on Call of Duty: Black Ops and The Outer Worlds franchise, has passed away.

Game developer Terry Hess, known for his work on 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and The Outer Worlds franchise, has sadly passed away.

As reported by Game Developer, Hess had an illustrious career. He began working as a 3D environment artist for both BlackOps Entertainment and Manifest Games in the mid-2000s.

He then went on to join Treyarch in 2005, working on the teams responsible for 2007’s Spider-Man 3, 2008’s 007: Quantum of Solace, and 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Hess continued to work on military shooters, with stints on DICE’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter, and Visceral Games and EA Montreal’s Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel.

It was in 2013 that Hess then joined Obsidian. After working on the free-to-play Armored Warfare, Hess became a part of the environments team on 2019’s The Outer Worlds, continuing his work on the still-in-development The Outer Worlds 2.

A GoFundMe was set up by Obdisidan Entertainment on behalf of Terry’s wife, Kelly Hess.

“We at Obsidian Entertainment are saddened by the loss of one of our own, Terry Hess. This fundraiser is for the amazing family he left behind,” the page reads.

“We wanted a way to offer not only the employees of Obsidian to help someone they held so dear, but for our community who has been touched by Terry's work to be able to help as well if they so choose.”

“Terry left a loving wife and daughter behind and this is for them. They will be the sole recipient of any funds raised here as we just want to do everything we can for them.”

Of his work on The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian said, “Terry had been taking his role as the lead environment artist incredibly seriously and pushed on what he felt we could, and should, be doing with the worlds we create from a visual standpoint. As we continue development of the sequel, we will strive to make sure that vision is achieved.”

“As someone who anyone from any department could talk to, Terry was warm, welcoming, and a fantastic mentor. His loss will be felt for a long time and will be impossible to replace. He will be missed greatly,” the eulogy finished.

It’s news that’s undoubtedly caused great shock and sadness throughout the industry.

Obsidian Entertainment producer Mikey Dowling tweeted, “We lost one of our own last week and it is rough. Terry was absolutely wonderful and can't be replaced. We want to be able to help his family in every way that we can so if you have the means, please help or at least share. Tell people you love them.”

Obsidian lead and senior animator Cathy Nichols added, “Last week Obsidian had an incredible loss of Terry Hess. He was a great friend and a lovely individual.”

GAMINGbible extends its condolences to Terry’s family, friends, and colleagues.
