It feels like every big video game company is busy acquiring all of the other ones they can right now. Or at least, they’re trying to, anyway.
Last year, Microsoft kicked things off with a bang when it announced its plans to acquire Activision Blizzard in the most expensive video game acquisition of all time. For the low, low price of $68.7 billion, Microsoft is set to own a whole host of popular IPs, including Overwatch, Spyro the Dragon, and of course, Call of Duty. Obviously though, that deal is facing some turbulence right now since the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority confirmed that it's blocking it, but that doesn't mean that it's all over yet.

Soon after that, Sony confirmed its plans to acquire the Destiny studio, Bungie, and stated that it still had “many more moves to make”. This brings us to now, as it’s been rumoured that Sony could soon be planning to acquire The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 studio, CD Projekt Red.

These rumours were kick-started by industry insider @PeterOvo5, who tweeted last week that the acquisition is “about to” happen. However, as SVG reports, during CD Projekt’s Q1 earnings call on Monday (29 May), president and CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed that the company is “not for sale”.
“Nothing has changed on our end,” Kiciński said when asked if the acquisition rumours were true. “So I can repeat what we've been saying throughout the years. CD Projekt is not for sale. We want to remain independent. We have - I believe excellent strategy, not easy to execute. For sure. But it's very exciting to follow our own path.”
All in all, this is very reassuring for The Witcher fans on Xbox. There's a plethora of new Witcher games in development, and if Sony really did acquire the company, there’d be a chance that they could all become PlayStation exclusives. Clearly, there’s nothing to be worried about on that front.
