For the last two decades, the Call of Duty series has been one of the most popular video game franchises of all time.
From 2003 humble beginnings with Call of Duty on PC to the mammoth that is the free-to-play battle royale Warzone of today. What’s more, all signs are pointing towards yet another hit this year with the reboot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.

However, in recent days thanks to a multiplayer matchmaking update on Xbox, old-school Call of Duty games have garnered a massive spike in player numbers with fans returning in droves to relive the classic Black Ops and Modern Warfare entries. So surely, this should be a joyous occasion for fans of the franchise wanting a dose of nostalgic first-person action, right?

Sadly, that does not seem to be the case for a lot of players due to the classic Call of Duty games still being ‘filled with hackers’ to ruin every genuine player's fun. Unfortunately, this has been a prominent issue with the series for years, but you’d think by now, Activision would have found a fix.
When Call of Duty: World at War was released in 2008, it became one of my favourite games in the series. Being a fan of CoD multiplayer, I was also eager to put my apparent skills against other players online. I was instantly put off when I was being killed by players not on the map as they should be, but from underneath it. I was never to return to World at War competitive multiplayer again, and I am sure that I wasn't alone either.
Fans of Call of Duty will know that hackers are a persistent problem that even occurs in the most recent entries. Hackers will not only shoot from underneath the map but through walls and even have auto-aim and invisibility cheats.
To our surprise, even though Activision has recently improved the matchmaking in classic Call of Duty games on Xbox, hackers are still running rampant, as warned by players on Reddit. In fact, I jumped into a game of Black Ops over the weekend and in my first match, a player ‘earned’ a helicopter killstreak with just one kill. Bear in mind that the match had only just started for everyone. Funny that.

“I've been switching between Modern Warfare 2, MW3, Black Ops and BO2. BO2 is probably the most filled with hackers out of those but I just back out and find another lobby,” replied BobbyJG888. “The others are pretty good and haven't really noticed any hackers.”
“My first game back on MW2 on Xbox there was a guy on my team who had a gun that shot AC-130 bullets. The other team didn’t stand a chance,” exclaimed another Reddit user. “Been playing OG MW2 for about 5 hours since servers were "fixed". I’ve run into maybe one hacker, if that. I've been lucky I guess,” said temetnoscesax.
It shouldn't really baffle me all that much that hackers are still ruining Call of Duty multiplayer for games that are a decade old, give or take. Hopefully, with Activision fixing the matchmaking issues, they might finally move on to tackling the hackers, but I won't be holding my breath.
