Bioware Has A New Approach For Updating ‘Anthem’

'Anthem' will instead receive seasonal updates instead of major new story releases.

Bioware has announced that it's dropping its plan for releasing new Acts for Anthem and instead will adopt a more traditional seasonal update release. This will allow the team to rework sections of the game that currently aren't as compelling as the developer intended and pull the focus away from big chunky new additions to the game.

When Anthem first launched, Bioware laid out a plan to update the game with new 'Acts'. These chunky releases would add new locations, characters, features, and tweaks to the game's systems based on player feedback. Each Act would progress the story and would end in a cataclysmic event that would set up the next Act's release. The first of these Acts was due to launch in May but, because Bioware was dealing with so much feedback and addressing priority fixes, it didn't ship until August.

"We hear your concerns on core issues in Anthem and are acting on it," Anthem's head of live service Chad Robertson wrote in a post on Bioware's site. "Those systems require a more thorough review and re-working versus quick fixes. We've got a team working on that now, and early results are promising.

"In order to address these long-range plans, we are moving away from the Acts structure for updates. Instead, we have additional seasonal updates planned for this year that we think players will enjoy. These events will deliver challenges and chases similar to what you've seen, and are built around some fun themes we're bringing to the game."

Potentially it is this focus on reworking systems currently in the game, rather than adding in more content that will build a better foundation for Anthem's future. That said, Bioware is still keeping quiet about what substantial changes it is making to Anthem's systems that will address the criticism the game received at launch and in the months following its release.
