CD Projekt RED has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will include a feature that the vast majority of major video game releases with localised languages don't have: full lip syncing for every language dub.

This is, of course, a massive deal that will likely have included a fair amount of extra work for the team. Most big games are localised in multiple languages, although it's almost always the case that translated text and dialogue simply sit over the top of existing facial animations. It's very rare that lip-syncing matches up to every recorded language.

Cyberpunk 2077
senior level designer Miles Tost and senior quest designer Philpp Weber confirmed the news on Twitter, revealing how proud they are to be able to include this feature for languages that don't always get the same level of support.

As I'm sure we've all learned by now, CDPR has a reputation for going the extra mile... or extra hundred miles. While that doesn't always come off in the studio's favour - see the multiple reports of crunch at the studio - in this instance it's really quite cool. It's also been confirmed that the team made use of third-party tech by JALI Research that allows facial animations to change with the language being spoken. I'd assume that made the whole process at least a little easier.

"For our scenes, our animation and cinematic teams of course put great artist-driven work on top of that for the results you see in-game," said Weber.

Cyberpunk 2077 will launch for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on November 19th, with Xbox Series S and X and PlayStation 5 versions arriving at some point in 2021.
