David Dastmalchian, who plays Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, is melting hearts all over the world as he has announced that he adopted a stray cat while filming and even got her a custom-made polka-dot costume.

You'll recognise Dastmalchian from, well, a lot of comic book movies and TV shows. His performance as one of Joker's henchmen in The Dark Knight was mesmerising and unnerving and opportunities rolled in for the actor after that. A frequent collaborator of director Denis Villeneuve, he's also appeared in Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049 and the upcoming Dune. And, he played Dwight Pollard in Gotham, Abra Kadabra in The Flash, Calendar Man and Penguin in Batman: The Long Halloween, and Kurt in the Ant-Man movies. Suffice to say, the guy's a pretty prolific actor these days.

We got a chance to chat to Idris Elba and Daniela Melchior about The Suicide Squad, and how the themes of finding a family and survival against all of the odds are explored in the film.

Spoilers for The Suicide Squad follow, so here's your warning if you're yet to catch the film in the cinemas or HBO Max.

Abner Krill, also known as Polka-Dot Man, is one of the stranger members of Task Force X. Probably. They're all weird, to be honest. His powers are a result of sadistic experimentation on him by his mother and cause his skin to erupt in colourful pustules. He must either vomit these polka-dots out of his body or use them as caustic projectile discs that burn through even the toughest of materials. Polka-Dot Man is quiet and fatalistic while the others bicker and show off their skills, however, as the story progresses, he becomes an integral part of the team's dynamic and ability to take down the big bad.

In a post to Instagram, Dastmalchian revealed another Task Force X member who happened to cross paths with the actor while the cast and crew were on location. "With the help of my @thesuicidesquad family & some generous animal lovers in Panama, I was able to rescue Bubblegum (full name: Abner Bubblegum Polka Dot Cat)," said Dastmalchian, sharing photos of the tabby in her costume that pays tribute to her namesake.

"She has been a blessing to our family & was instrumental in helping us through the pandemic," continued the actor, thanking director James Gunn and costume designer Judianna Makovsky. Yes, that's the Judianna Makovsky - three-time Academy Award nominated costume designer. This little cat has a custom-made polka-dot costume from her. That's one heck of a rags-to-riches story.
