Netflix has shared a first-look at the Dragon's Dogma anime series, along with confirmation that show will air on September 17th. The streaming giant first announced it would be adapting the cult Capcom RPG back in March 2019, though the project went quiet for a long time after that.

"Only the Arisen can face the Dragon and defeat the apocalypse," said Netflix in a Twitter tease. Take a look the gorgeous promotional image below to get a feel of how the anime will look.

"Based on a world-famous action RPG set in an open world, Dragon's Dogma from Capcom will be brought to life as a Netflix original anime series," reads the official blurb. "The story follows a man's journey seeking revenge on a dragon who stole his heart. On his way, the man is brought back to life as an 'Arisen'. An action adventure about a man challenged by demons who represent the seven deadly sins of humans."

Dragon's Dogma was first released in 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and quickly gained a devoted following of RPG fantasy enthusiasts. The title was later re-released with improved graphics and new features for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, where it managed to win over even more fans and critical praise

Last year, the game was ported over to Nintendo Switch where I finally managed to check it out. While it's not so much my cup of tea gameplay-wise, I found myself fascinated by the world and characters. I'm definitely interested to see where the Netflix show takes us, and I hope it's as violent as the game, which literally kicks off with a dragon ripping out a dude's heart.

Needless to say, fans of the 2012 game have been clamouring for a proper sequel for nearly a decade now. There's only so much the occasional re-release and port can do for these people. Hopefully the anime will spark a fresh surge in interest and lead to the new game that they so desperately crave. That, or the original game gets ported again to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
